Newby Chairman Mr. Nirmal Sethia raises a new meaning on “bringing out the fine china” with his latest addition to The Chitra Collection. On September 6th, the 2016 Guinness World Records announced Mr. Sethia’s designed teapot masterpiece, The Egoist, as the “Most Valuable Teapot in the World,” valued at $3 million. The official record event was held in a most fitting venue—Mosimann’s private dining club in Belgrave Square, London, the site of the oldest jewelry house in the world.
The award-wining teapot’s small size is enough for one cup of tea, suggesting the name The Egoist.
“This teapot is a tribute to tea provenance and stands in testament to this most ancient, culturally important and beautiful of drinks,” Mr. Sethia shared. “It is hoped this object will help understanding, globally, of the art, heritage and historical and contemporary importance of tea. It will take pride of place in the Chitra Collection, the world’s largest private collection of tea accessories. I am honored that my contribution to tea heritage has been recognized by Guinness World Records.”
After Mr. Sethia developed the design, the commissioned Italian jeweler dedicated over 1730 hours to manufacture The Egoist. The glittering Egoist teapot features 1658 brilliant-cut diamonds across its surface and 386 brilliant-cut rubies surrounds the natural ruby bead featured on lid. A super-fine Thai ruby framed in the shape of a sun sits in the center to complete a spectrum of shine.
The N Sethia Foundation has full ownership of The Egoist, along with the rest of The Chitra Collection. The Foundation funds projects related but not limited to education and health.
