What does it take to ensure Newby teas remains the very best? Many factors are involved when talking about our selection process.
Behind every Newby blend are almost 200 cups of tea that were tasted. To begin the selection process, the top 10-15 tea gardens of a region are identified from whom we will source tea samples. Our master tea tasters select these gardens carefully through an intensive study of the tea estate prior to formulating a recommended list.
As do any agriculture product, tea has its prime quality seasons, or flushes – the first flush from March to May, and the second flush around June to August. Newby purchases its tea only during these prime peaks – ensuring our customers’ cup of tea are consistently of the highest quality.
Upon shortlisting the gardens, samples begin arriving at our tea purchasing department. Samples are screened and further shortlisted before sending a set to the Newby Head Office in London, where the master taster performs the final and comparative tasting. The tasting process undergoes a series of steps to ensure an improved, consistent product – including comparing the current year’s tea to the blend’s previous blend in terms of leaf quality, aroma, color, and of course, flavor. We call this challenging our internal benchmarks. After initial decisions are made, the final list is tasted once again to guarantee that the teas conform to the highest standards.
Based on this final selection, the supplier sends us a chest-drawn sample of the purchased tea, which is again tasted and compared with the sample the offer was placed with. If the new sample matches or is superior to the quality of prior sample, then the final approval is granted.
Tea is delicate and porous, and susceptible to damage and contamination. This is why we emphasize the preservation and packaging of our Newby teas. Each shipment of Newby’s teas from the garden to the factory has an additional polythene wrap to ensure protection against heat, humidity, and contaminants that may destroy the tea. All aspects of food safety are cleared by our chosen independent laboratory before the shipment of tea is allowed to enter our preservation factory.
